Nursery

Where the adventure begins…

The journey to becoming a fluent reader and confident writer starts well before your child begins ‘formal’ phonics teaching at school. In this section we will show you how speaking, playing and sharing picture books with you, will lay the foundations for your child’s future learning before they even begin school.

We discuss the important role speaking and playing with your child has in preparing them to become able readers and writers. We will also explain how the activities you see in Nursery prepare your child for school and give you examples of simple, inexpensive ideas to try at home.

It may sound simple, but speaking and playing with your child is the single biggest thing you can do to support their learning. In this video we explain why and offer ideas for you to use at home.

Preparing to Write

We show you all the tips and tricks which early years teachers use to get young children ready to write confidently in Reception and Key Stage 1.
